Remember Five Blessings

Psalm 59:16- 17
“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning. I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. 17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.” NIV

I have an old rusty wheelbarrow that I filled with dirt and then planted various flowers in it.

The flowers were still young and fresh when we had heavy rain and thunderstorms. A few of them ended up looking like this.

I have felt that way myself when the negative things of life just seem to keep pouring down on me.

This morning my daughter had discovered a new devotional book for young girls to do. I decided to sit down and join her while she did the devotion for today. It mentioned praising God during the storms and afterward.

My daughter turned to me and said, “You better praise God during the thunderstorms.”

I had to laugh, since that is one thing I do not do. The loud sound of thunder over my head is terrifying to me. Just yesterday, when we returned from our errands, we stayed in the car listening to the audio book we had on. I found myself drifting in and out of a nice nap. My daughter interrupted that nap by saying, “Uh, mom we should get in, it’s raining…” BAM Thunder clapped over our heads. I woke up, screamed for us to get out of the car and get into the house. We made a mad dash into our home. This amused my daughter all day.

So when the devotional led us to say five blessings to thank God for, I included the thunderstorm and that there was not damage to our home during the storm.

But also, we took time to thank God for all the things He provides everyday, and for all the times He has been our fortress in times of trouble.

My daughter then started making up a tune to the Bible verse and we had fun making up one tune after another.

Yes, there are days I feel like a flattened flower after a heavy rain, but God is there. And He gives me the strength to get through the storms that blow in.  And I might get beaten up a bit, but He helps me to stand.

Everyone has different seasons they are in in life, whether in a storm, coming out of a storm, or in a season of sunshine.

What five blessings can you thank God for right now, even in the midst of your storm?

What five blessings can you thank Him for if you can now see the colorful rainbow after the storm?

What five blessings can you thank Him for if God has caused the sun to shine bright in your life?

Sing of His strength in the morning.

Sing of His love.
He is our fortress.

He is our refuge in times of trouble.
Sing praises to God.
